Coaches Interview Series: Sports Fundraisers-Ottawa Youth Soccer

Below is a quick interview we did with Coach Jen of an Ottawa Youth Soccer club.

1. What questions do you ask when deciding what fundraising options to pursue?
(ie: how much are the start up costs? what is the potential revenue? how much work is involved? etc)
Normally we try to determine whether or not it will be a lucrative event. We also try our best to set something up where we already have some contact. We try to incorporate some activity that the girls will enjoy(car washes)
2.  Briefly describe some your most successful fundraisers to date?
One of the most successful fundraisers we did was setting up a table at Loblaws and accepting donations for a draw. People donated however much they wanted and we drew a $100 gift certificate for Loblaws. We had to purchase the certificate ahead of time.
3. What were the main characteristics of the fundraisers listed above that made them a success?
(ie high profit margins, low start up costs etc)
There was little commitment financially on our part. It was set up such that the girls only had to work in shifts of three hours each. It was a safe environment for them and there was little risk of us losing any money.
4. What is the average revenue from one fundraising idea?
The Loblaws fundraisers, on average, brought in approximately $1200.00 each. Car washes usually bring in about $500. or so.
5. What does your group enjoy least about fundraising?
I think they dislike the time that it takes. They realize the benefits only once the fundraiser is complete and we are able to tally up the revenue.
6. What does your group enjoy the most about fundraising (if any)?
They enjoy the end result in terms of financial gain but they also enjoy being together as a team.
7. Has your group been able to use email or the internet to help with fundraising announcements etc?
I don't believe that we have ever tried those methods of advertising.
8. If you could design a perfect fundraiser, what characteristics would it have?
It would be lucrative with little risk of losing any money, and would not be so time consuming.
